ARCHITECTURE IN THE UNLIMITED TERRACQUEOUS EDGE
The volume addresses the unique relationships that are established along the boundary between architecture and water in its various forms, particularly the sea. Architecture that intervenes on the land-water margin has a difficult task. It is the meeting place between two worlds, liquid and solid, each with its own laws, rules and languages that suddenly intersect, almost discovering what each lacks for a complete “definition” and configuration suitable for both. In order to perceive its essence and then intervene with the project, it seems necessary not to start directly from the sea and its edge, but to move away, even if only a little, to reach a distance that allows for an almost wide-angle and broader view, and then embark on a path that can lead more consciously towards it. It is almost a question of following the path that water takes as a river, lake, rain or “artificial” water, i.e. as an architectural element, before it becomes the sea, in order to try to understand some elements of its “past”, which inevitably contain some of its “future”. It therefore starts from the relationship between architecture and water in general and in its various forms, gradually and increasingly consciously arriving at a more intimate and specific relationship between architecture and the sea. It follows a path that is both real and figurative, passing through various Mediterranean and Atlantic cities – in particular Barcelona, Messina, La Coruña and San Sebastián – and some emblematic projects on the sea – such as the Teatro Marittimo in Messina, the Kursaal in Sebastián and various projects on the waterfront by César Portela, also analysed in relation to variables linked to spaces, times and places –, will allow us to approach and get closer to the architectural project on the seafront.
ARQUITECTURA EN EL ILIMITADO BORDE TERRÁQUEO
El volumen aborda las singulares relaciones que se establecen en el límite entre la arquitectura y el agua en sus diversas formas y, en particular, el mar. La arquitectura que interviene en el margen entre la tierra y el agua tiene una tarea nada fácil. Se trata del lugar de encuentro entre dos mundos, el líquido y el sólido, cada uno con sus propias leyes, reglas y lenguajes que de repente se cruzan, casi descubriendo lo que le falta a cada uno para una «definición» completa y una configuración adecuada para ambos. Para percibir su esencia y poder luego intervenir con el proyecto, parece necesario no partir directamente del mar y de su orilla, sino alejarse aunque sea un poco para alcanzar una distancia que permita una visión casi gran angular y más amplia, para luego emprender un camino que pueda conducir más conscientemente hacia él. Se trata casi de seguir el recorrido que hace el agua como río, lago, lluvia o agua «artificial», es decir, como elemento arquitectónico, antes de llegar a ser mar, para tratar de conocer algunos elementos de su «pasado», que contienen, inevitablemente, algunos de su «futuro». Se parte, por tanto, de la relación entre la arquitectura y el agua en general y en sus diferentes formas, para llegar poco a poco, de forma cada vez más consciente, a una relación más íntima y específica entre la arquitectura y el mar. Se sigue un recorrido a la vez real y figurado que, pasando por diferentes ciudades mediterráneas y atlánticas – en particular Barcelona, Messina, La Coruña y San Sebastián – y algunos proyectos emblemáticos sobre el mar – como el Teatro Marittimo de Messina, el Kursaal de San Sebastián y varios proyectos sobre el margen terrestre-acuático de César Portela, analizados también en relación con variables ligadas a espacios, tiempos y lugares –, permitirá acercarse y aproximarse con el proyecto de arquitectura al borde del mar.
